Gemstones

Gemstones are precious and semi-precious stones. They are typically are grouped based on their shared characteristics such as chemical composition, crystal structure, color, or rarity. This classification system helps gemologists and consumers identify, differentiate, and appreciate different types of gemstones.

Some common classes of gemstones include diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and opals. However, from a chemical composition angle, they are grouped into three main groups; Oxides, Silicates and Borates

oxides

Oxides

Gemstones classed as Oxides are a category of minerals that contain oxygen atoms bonded to one or more other elements. These gemstones often have a distinct color and chemical composition due to the presence of metal elements combined with oxygen.

Examples of gemstones in this class include corundum (ruby and sapphire) and spinel.

Silicates

Silicates

Gemstones classed as Silicates are a category of gemstones that are composed primarily of silicate minerals. This group includes common gemstones such as quartz, amethyst, jade, and garnet, among others.

Silicate gemstones are known for their unique and vibrant colors, as well as their durability and versatility in jewelry making.

Borates

Borates

Gemstones classed as Borates are a group of minerals that contain boron atoms within their chemical structure. These gemstones typically have a unique appearance and can come in a variety of colors and forms. Some common examples of gemstones classed as Borates include turquoise, howlite, and danburite.
